The summer of 2026 includes the release of three excellent shoes for your own ultimate and ultra, monsters of rock tour. Which shoe will you be choosing this summer?
1. The North Face Offtrail Ultra
Price: $190
The Philosophy: Designed to maximize ground feel, agility, and precision without the stiff, aggressive lever of a carbon plate. It uses a single layer of dual-density, supercritical DREAMBOUND foam (a TPU/EVA blend) that frames a softer center core with a firmer outer rim for immediate stability.
Why it fits technical running: This model features a 5mm lug SURFACE CTRL outsole paired with a specialized "climbing zone" under the big toe for precise edging on slick rock. An integrated, elastic Screeguard gaiter keeps dirt, rocks, and pine needles entirely out of the shoe.
Best For: Snappy, technical mountain terrain where dancing over rocks, aggressive climbing, and nimble lateral stability are the top priorities.
2. Norda 055
Price: $325
The Philosophy: True to Norda’s reputation, this is a premium, ultra-engineered option utilizing incredibly expensive, indestructible materials. It pairs a light, ultra-durable Dyneema upper with a high-cut elasticated bootie and a high-performance midsole.
Why it fits technical running: The unibody bootie construction entirely seals the foot from the environment. Underfoot, it utilizes a custom Vibram Megagrip Elite outsole with deep 5mm lugs. While the cushion profile is slightly firmer out of the box than massive ultra-plush racers, the structural integrity of the shoe won't warp or degrade when twisted across sharp talus or technical singletrack.
Best For: Ultra-marathon distances in rugged, abrasive mountain environments where long-term durability and absolute foot lockdown are paramount.
3. Mount to Coast M1
Price: $195
The Philosophy: Purpose-built for 100-mile mountain efforts, the M1 is Mount to Coast’s pinnacle, high-protection trail cruiser. It steps away from their lighter road-to-trail hybrids to give mountain runners a high-rebound, highly protective ride using their next-gen JETCELL supercritical foam.
Why it fits technical running: To manage the inevitable foot swelling that comes during 50- to 100-mile races, it features a unique TUNEDFIT Dual Lacing System. This lets you lock down the midfoot separately from the forefoot. Grip is handled by a full Vibram Megagrip Litebase outsole with 4mm Traction Lugs.
Best For: Relentless, long-haul mountain races where muscle fatigue management, high energy return, and protective underfoot cushion are valued over raw rock-scrambling nimbleness.
The Summary
For pure nimbleness and technical control: The TNF Offtrail Ultra ($190) keeps you low, precise, and nimble.
For indestructible armor and absolute premium build: The Norda 055 ($325) provides flawless grip and unmatched durability.
For protective, long-haul energy return over 100 miles: The Mount to Coast M1 ($195) optimizes foot comfort and independent lockdown.
