People are lazy. Today these lazy people like to poke fun at Goggins and reduce him down to a 10 second clip about boats and logs. Lazy people don’t read books.
Goggins wrote 2 books: Can’t Hurt Me and Never Finished. Both books revolve around actionable lessons that we can apply to our lives. These are lessons that David used himself and is sharing with us so that we might navigate the difficult waters of life that are not unique to anyone. I’m posting this because I’m in the process of reviewing them for an upcoming difficult challenge.
Can’t Hurt Me: The 10 Challenges
In his first book, Goggins outlines 10 challenges designed to build a "Calloused Mind".
Chapter & Title
Challenge Focus
Key Action / Lesson
Ch 1: I Should Have Been a Statistic
1. Face Your Bad Hand
Inventory all past traumas, failures, and current limitations. Write them down to convert former pain into operational fuel.
Ch 2: Truth Hurts
2. Set Up Your Accountability Mirror
Be ruthlessly honest about your flaws and goals. Write actionable steps on Post-Its and stick them on your mirror to face daily.
Ch 3: The Impossible Task
3. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Identify things you dislike doing that are good for you (e.g., cold showers, early mornings, hard tasks) and make them routine.
Ch 4: Taking Souls
4. Beat Your Opponent (Taking Souls)
In competitive or high-pressure situations, outwork your critics, bosses, or opponents so thoroughly that your excellence forces respect.
Ch 5: Armored Mind
5. Visualize Success & Failure
Visualize not just the victorious outcome, but every point of friction, obstacle, and pain you will face along the way—and how you will answer it.
Ch 6: It's Not About a Capstone
6. Stock Your Cookie Jar
Build a mental list of every major trial and hardship you have survived. Dip into it when you hit a wall to remind yourself of what you're made of.
Ch 7: The Most Powerful Weapon
7. Overcome Your Governor
When your mind tells you that you are completely empty, you are only at ~40%. Push past your stopping point in 5% increments to stretch your ceiling.
Ch 8: Talent Not Required
8. Schedule Your Time
Eliminate wasted hours through strict time-blocking. Categorize your day into study/work, exercise, and recovery—treating time as a non-renewable asset.
Ch 9: Uncommon Amongst Uncommon
9. Maintain Continuous Effort
Achieving success is not the end. Sustain elite output even when surrounded by high achievers; do not allow comfort to make you soft.
Ch 10: The Empowered Failure
10. The After-Action Report (AAR)
Audit every failure coldly without emotion. Write down what went right, what failed, and how to execute the strategy on your next attempt.
Never Finished: The 8 Evolutions
The second book shifts focus from initial mental toughness to sustaining high-level performance over time.
Evolution 1: Manage Distracting Injuries
The Lesson: In emergency medicine, a "distracting injury" is a visible wound that pulls focus away from life-threatening internal issues. In life, minor drama or setbacks draw focus from your long-term goals. Tune into the ticking clock and refuse to lose time on secondary bullshit.
Evolution 2: Recycle Your Pain
The Lesson: Never let negative experiences go to waste. Speak your doubts, trauma, and criticism out loud into a recorder to study them. By listening to your own friction points regularly, you desensitize yourself to them and convert them into raw fuel.
Evolution 3: The One-Second Decision
The Lesson: High-stakes moments are lost or won in single seconds of panic. When pain peaks, take a "knee in the chaos" to pause, breathe, and evaluate before making an impulse decision to quit. Never quit while panic or pain is at its peak.
Evolution 4: Become a Full-Time Savage
The Lesson: Adaptation is an ongoing operational stance. When conditions change or tools evolve, do not cling to old, outdated habits out of ego. Adapt to new challenges head-on without expecting aid stations or shortcuts.
Evolution 5: Be a Disciple of Discipline
The Lesson: Discipline is the skeleton key that unlocks doors built to keep you out. When goals collapse or plans turn to shit, turn off self-pity, analyze the problem strategically, and rely on routine work volume rather than emotional state.
Evolution 6: Foxhole Mentality
The Lesson: Audit your inner circle ruthlessly. Small-minded or comfortable people will grant you permission to quit when things get tough. Keep only those in your "foxhole" who hold you to your highest standard and push you toward your full potential.
Evolution 7: The Standard of Excellence in Small Things
The Lesson: How you execute mundane, unglamorous tasks reflects your internal self-respect. A half-assed job on simple chores proves a lack of foundational integrity. Take pride in doing menial work exceptionally well to condition yourself for major trials.
Evolution 8: The Endless Hunt (Never Finished)
The Lesson: Greatness is not a static destination. The reward for completing a massive goal is simply the opportunity to take on the next, harder level. Maintain the humility of a beginner regardless of your past accomplishments.
